This is an honest review. I hope you digest it. Thanks.I was very excited to read this book - my first New-Age Indian author.

But let us keep that for later and jump into the book -->
So meet Rivanah Bannerjee, whose character traits and character development rate as follows -
1. She is described as very hot in the book (like some high school cheerleader). Men ogle and melt, all at the same time.
2. Men send her undergarments as gifts (she accepts them, you know) and harass her, but this sati-savitri doesn't even get the hint about harassment.
3. She replies to unknown numbers OR she does not know about the number block feature available. Women in real life block the phone number which forms the source of indecent messages, but Ms. Bannerjee here talks to strangers like long-lost-friends. Smart lady (^.^)
4. She doesn't talk about sexual harassment (just what we need to teach the girls today).
Narration
If I was given a chance to write the book, I would have written it much better than the writer.
Too many grammatical errors, poor sentence framing - all the things a Grammar Nazi like me would hate.
Plot
1. Stranger messages Rivanah
2. Rivanah messages Stranger
3. Shit happens
4. More messages exchanged
5. Shit happens again
Too many loopholes. The clues to the 'Stranger' are placed at predictable intervals. Too easy to guess.
But...
The twist at the end was good (but bad placement). Makes you want to read the next book.
In Conclusion:
Read this book only if you have the time and patience, not worth a try.

When I picked up this book, I wasn't sure what to expect as this was the first book I was reading from this author. But once I started reading, there was no stopping! The story is about Rivanah, who has recently moved out to Mumbai in order to pursue her career. Life seems good except it isn't! Just as she steps in to Mumbai, she is welcomed into a world of confusion where a there is a person who is following her. No, not following, not stalking but it is someone who knows everything about her but she doesn't even have a clue as to who it is! She first brushes it off as something trivial but things start getting out of hand until she can no longer contain the mystery and seeks out the help of police. Will they be able to uncover the identity of this mysterious stranger and find out what his true intentions are?
There are so many things that make this story line. There is love, there is heartbreak, there is family pressure, black mailing and vengeance but the most important element of this story line is the mystery. Right from the beginning, it keeps you guessing who this stranger might be. You think you have finally solved the mystery but only to be proved wrong!
There is also this doubt that keeps you wondering - The stranger isn't a bad person. He is someone who has only helped Rivanah except for the last time. Even then, he hadn't harmed her! Who is this person? Why hide behind anonimity mask? What does he plan to achieve by making Rivanah do his biddings? The suspense is intriguing!
The book is interesting till the end and you cant help but keep shooting in the dark to guess the identity of this intriguing stranger! I just can't wait for the next book in the trilogy.
...moreWorse still, Bollywood will squeeze a movie out of this. Help.
Has few sexual encounters mentioned which honestly I didnt feel were important to the whole story but since its only part 1 and the story has not let down I have made my peace with it.
A good read all in all
The book revolves around psychological as well as love and life angle. There are brutal mind games which keep the readers on tenterhooks whereas there are some critical twists that keep the story going till
You are not the sinner but what happens if the world spins around and every moment becomes a living nightmare. When life gives you surprises it ensures that you are on your own to face it and get it over with. But what if you are fighting against a nameless force. It's the fight of your life. The book revolves around psychological as well as love and life angle. There are brutal mind games which keep the readers on tenterhooks whereas there are some critical twists that keep the story going till the end. There's no breathing space and the edge of the seat suspense and drama is cherry on the top. The bases and tracks have been covered smartly to transit the reader to the world of uncertainty.
There are few downsides too. There are few spacing issues in the book which is quite annoying. The sexual content could have been toned down to keep the book more livening.
All in all there's too much drama and a cloud of fear and intrigue to look up to in the book. The story hides the best and delivers it like lightening once it gets into the groove. It's a unique combination of love and psychology that gives it an extra edge and leaves some baffling questions in the mind of the readers. A book with a class of its own.

I just want an Indian author to write a female character who doesn't have to depend on others to know who she is or what she needs to do with her life. Rivanah is independent, she's going to live alone in a new city, far away from her parents which is quite commendable.
It turns out that all she cares about in life is romance.

It turns out that all she cares about in life is romance.
1. Even after being cheated on by her long time boyfriend, she can't help but think about him? All the time. Uggh she's in her twenties. I know it's tough but now she chooses a guy, whom she had utterly humiliated as a teen in front of her whole school, as her rebound?
Girl, don't you ever learn you lesson with boys?
2. So she's so mind numbingly hawt that guys don't wanna know anything more. Wow. Okay. She has flirted with every single guy around her age portrayed in the book, no matter her relationship status. She also feels uncomfortable that her boyfriend has a female best friend. The boyfriend cheated on her but her parents were still there. Trust your parents a little more?
3. This one really made me mad. So, she decided not to be an eyewitness for a gang rape case. How dare she vent "HER ANGER" on social media??? If you cannot help her, just don't feel so good that you shared your THOUGHTS that nobody cares about. If you feel so strongly about them, take a stand.
I'm pissed because she didn't once consider coming forward to the police. At least a decent person feels guilty and CONSIDERS!!!
4. So she can't get over her cheating ex. Bam, enter hot guy. Bam, enters her pheromones. Bam, enters creepy guy who clicks your pic without permission. Bam, flirting mode activated.
5. If I were in a new city and shit happened to me, I'd definitely either consult my parents or visit the police station. Blackmail, stalking from the stranger, sexually harassed. Every time, somebody had to help her. As a person, that's not how you lead life. You can't be the pawn to somebody's king. You need to be the controller of your own life. She feels good about what the stranger made her do and she feels she's grown up as a person. Has she? Was she ever her own person?
Points I liked
1. It was a 2 star read but the ending was good so I gave it a 3 star.
2. I can actually think of Rivanah's character symbolically as the problems of today's generation and the stranger's philosophy as the author's solutions. Plus it was an easy read so even readers who're not very consistent with their reading can go through this easily.
3. Other than Rivanah, I found all the characters interesting in their own way and comfortable in their skin. Ishita and Danny shared a little bit of their backstory and I enjoyed getting to know them. I liked every character other than Rivanah.
4. The biggest mystery of all is "Who is the stranger?" So that's a huge reason of why I was reading it. He's intriguing and the "texting misunderstanding" between the stranger, Danny and Abhiraj was quite interesting. How he does all that? Why does he do all that? These are the questions being asked.

This book left me with a dull headache, a little bit of dizziness and a lot of confusion. Okay even if you put the plot, characters and dialogue to one side, I'm still shell-shocked by the fact that the author wrote in, "Hey, are you mad or what?" as a serious bit of conversation.THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN EXACTLY HOW I IMAGINE THE AUTHOR TALKS AND THAT IS NOT OKAY. One of the first things in whatever, 'Writing 101' is, "do NOT write like you talk." It's pretty simple. Getting through the book felt like giving an exam where the examiner has made several glaring and horrendous typos in the exam text. The writing style left me with a fair bit of trauma that the lackluster, lukewarm and lethargic characters could not take away.
I don't even want to talk about why the main character, Rivanah, made my blood boil. Perhaps it was her complete lack of independent thought, entitled and bratty attitude or just the fact that she was in no simple words, a shit person. This random stranger that she develops weird sexual feelings for (hello??? he's a STALKER who keeps sending you threatening messages, it's not courtship) tries to make her a better human being by having her do some charity type tasks. She does those with extreme reluctance, preferring instead to bitch, cry and moan about how terrible her life is and how she hasn't been able to buy branded clothes.
Hard pass on this one.

How will you feel if you shift to a new city, away from your parents and know nobody there? What if you get to know that your boyfriend, whom you are madly in love with, is cheating on you? Nothing seems to be working fine, people whom you thought to be friends actually have hidden intentions to harm you? What if you have no one to share your miseries with? What if suddenly your whole life seems to be meaningless? And what if you realise that someone is stalking you? Some of these thoughts will leave you depressed and some will scare you to death. And think if all this together is happening at the same time, what situation will it be like? And that's what the main character is going through. Novoneel Chakraborty's main girl Rivanah Banerjee is a chirpy, happy go lucky, full of life girl whose dreams are like that of any other girl from middle class family. She shifts to Mumbai from Kolkata to start a new life, new job, and a bright future ahead only to realise that destiny has other plans for her.
Immediately she realises that there is someone who is keeping an eye on her, who is following her every move, who reads her mind, who knows what she is gonna do next. She has a stalker whom she calls stranger. And slowly and steadily this stranger starts ruling her life. This stranger helps her come out of problems, supports her emotionally, sometimes threatens her too, wants to have his own ways, never harms her physically. And in return wants her to do things for him. They only communicate through messages and he never reveals his true identity. Every time Rivanah feels that her life is back on track and she knows stranger enough, he turns her life upside down.
The book is a love story cum thriller, the moment you think you know who the stranger is, he takes you by surprise and leaves you thinking again. Novoneel has used simple language and expressed situations well. First timers and thrill lovers can start their reading journey through this book. Author knew no bullshit will work for him so he sticked to the point. The plot is interesting though author could have worked more on characterisation. The suspense grips you and doesn't let you keep the book aside. Many would read it in one go. Bollywood can make a movie out of it actually.
So, just to see who the stranger is and what exactly he wants, I would definitely read the other two books for this trilogy.

Also, The next in the Stranger Trilogy is out in july. Yes. You can pre-order it in amazon for just 135rs. Ofc, I already did as soon as i finished the book. :P
Right from the first page, till the very last, It will keep you hooked.
But For those who dislike romance/love/crush and stuff, Stay away from this book. I don't want you people to rate it 1 and 2 stars just because you don't like the genre. Hard to believe that Such YOUNG & talented authors exist in India. Ofc, There are a few, But most of them stick to College campus love story or the typical ones. But Novoneel is different from them. Completely out of his Comfort zone, He delivers a Mystery Package.
This is a Trilogy.. Obviously it ended in a cliffhanger.
To be brutally honest with you, I had goosebumps when I read the last final sentences of the book. I shuddered for a second. Ever since I read this book, I always have this creepy feeling of someone following me and lurking behind me. Whoa! ! Read this continuously for 4 hours. Dammit, I couldn't get ma hands of this one.
Read No more ! Hurry and grab your copy of this book in amazon and read it asap. It's worth buying and Novoneel deserves a lot of credit for his work :)

Last thing, Before reading this book, Have a clear mind and DO NOT expect any horror like stuff to happen every time you flip a page. Please don't have any expectations.
...moreI think this book gave me the thrill I needed at the moment. The guy/girl who was a well-wisher/secret admirer/stalker...and maybe now a psycho killer (maybe) going after Rivanah was seeking someone else like her, or going after her for revenge.
It kind of seemed to me like the serial killer series that went on from one page to the next, and when you think..."Now, now all will be revealed"..another twist came "You are my stake"...there were many lines, but this one took the hit for me. <3 <3 <3

But to tell the truth, I made a mental picture of the psycho...a handsome hunk who, when looked at someone with those all inquiring eyes and with full devoted attention, everything would look insanely hush and zoned to one thing, and the face was chiseled from some wild and handsomeness, like the weather, all time changing and showing not the good side, but also the worst beauty/bestiality of anything. This came to mind when I read this book, thinking of how the psycho looked like.
I know I sound insane, but these things lead to worse situations for people, but I couldn't help but think this. But yea, its a serious business for some people who faced it/face it.
Overall, I am literally craving to read the second book.

This isn't the usual Indian writing which is usually about Love stories. Sure there is a love story but that's just the theme. The main storyline is the thriller/suspense arc. WRITING:
The author is quite fluent in English and it's written in a flowing manner. Meaning that one idea leads to another. You don't ever feel that you were engrossed in one thing and suddenly the author is talking about something else. And it's still written in simple terms.
Ocassionally there is some humor but it still maintains the suspense. You keep trying to guess what happens next. I finished this book and kept thinking about the story / events that happened for sometime.
Overall a great book. I'll soon pick up the next part of this series. Would definitely recommend this book to others. It's along the lines of "Before you go to sleep" for it's thrills.

He is one of the few Indian pulp-fiction writers who has great command on the language which makes his novel a great reading experience. You can easily complete any of his books in a single sitting itself. This time I picked his most-talked about book- The Book 1 in "The Stranger Trilogy" which is named "Marry Me, Stranger". Though I had this book with me for last 1.5 years but I didn't read it as I have the habit of reading trilogies only after it's last part is released. I am an impatient personality, after all. Haha! After completing this book, I can only say that Novoneel is one of the few authors like Ravi Subramanian who keeps improving with his every book. And this one is clearly another feather in his cap.
The language and narration that Novoneel uses to tell his story is very simple yet so authentic and beautiful that you find it very literary. And even though his book deals with love story as a foundation of the premises, he doesn't restrict the story to the tale of two lovers only. He always add that punch in his books which makes them special and talking about this book specifically, author has just mind-blown with each page. The suspense that he keeps almost till the last page skews a reader in you as initially you die to know why a "stranger" is troubling the protagonist and later on, you almost kill yourself while reading as fast as you can to know who actually the stranger is. And the way anti-climax and climax is written, you almost get surprised with an unexpected twist looking into your face. And the book ends at a very great moment that will not let you sleep until and unless you do not start reading the second book in the trilogy. Philosophical lines in between are the icing on the cake.
In his 5th book, Novoneel has given great description of each character which makes it easy for you to understand psyche of each one of them. It helped this thriller wonderfully as you know which characters are going to support the protagonist up to what level. And that makes it more interesting for a reader to keep guessing who the stranger is. Though at a point of time, you start feeling that it's kind of ghost who's behind the protagonist but still you want to know why exactly is it behind the protagonist. Right from the first page to the last, Novoneel keeps this book powerful enough to make the reader read it without a blink of an eye. For me, this is one of the best work of Novoneel till now. I am rating it 4 stars out of 5. All of his last 4 books have received 3.75* each from me. Finally, for me, Novoneel has taken his writing to the next level with this book. I am going to start reading The Book 2 in the Stranger trilogy from tomorrow.
Thanks.

This is the first book I read of Novoneel Chakraborty. My friend had borrowed this from our common friend. While she was returning it her back, I saw the title of the novel 'Marry Me, Stranger' and it made me curious to read the book as I wanted to know what's the story of this stranger and I borrowed it from her. As soon as I borrowed it I read the prologue but unfortunately since I was in office, I couldn't read more.Next day, I started reading and completed it with another curiosity to read the next part.
Rivannah had shifted to Mumbai from Kolkata as she had got placed in a Software Company. As soon as she reached Mumbai, she started noticing that a stranger is following her. The stranger is a blackmailer, who blackmails her for her own good. He asks her to learn to prepare her favourite dishes. If not he'll make her cry. She ignores his message. And he reveals the truth of his love 'Ekansh' who was cheating on her. The stranger helps her many times, Like by helping her to get her MMS clip from Prateek who liked her in school days and his obsession for her continued in office too. The Stranger has no voice, no face, no name, no identity but he has an intention. Stranger says, 'Nothing comes for free' and for every help the stranger does, he asks her to do some social cause. Rivannah starts dating a struggling actor. Abhiraj starts loving her and wants to get married to her. Even the stranger starts loving her. Her life had become a mess because of the stranger. She takes help of Police, and tries to find out who the stranger is. In this process, she comes to know about Hiya Chowdhary, her friend who committed suicide and whose favorite dish is same as Rivannah. Whatever her hobby or ambition was, the stranger made Rivannah do that.
There is a continuation to this novel where she'll find answers and who the stranger is.
This book revolves around love story but it is a thriller. Every page increases curiosity. Every chapter has surprises. There are many philosophical quotes in it. The character description and narration is awesome! The plot is fantastic. This Novel is engaging. Excited to read his next books. He is one of the best author by far.

Will Rivanah get away alive? 😐Even though the plot sounds good, the flow was not good. The character portrayal was uneven. I wonder how a well educated person is okay with all the threats and mistreatment.

I am not going to pick up the rest of the series.
